Review of Sonatine (1993) by Andrew B — 14 Aug 2007
Kitano writes, directs and acts in his best movie, and one of the great Japanese movies of recent years. As a failed Yakuza, he and his men are sent on a fools-errand to Okinawa. Kitano is a master - he has the confidence to stare blankly at the camera for what seems like minutes, but says more than most Hollywood screenplays.
Original, funny and incredibly sad. Again Joe Hisaishi provides a superb score - I definately recommend buying the soundtrack album.
