Review of Sonatine (1993) by Thomas G — 16 Nov 2007
Bizarrely paced and yet somehow right, Kitano's deconstructive yakuza film is a minimalist masterwork. Taking the "badass gangster" and subjecting him to unbiased (or is it amoral?) and at-arm's-length character analysis, the film peels away the layers of self-loathing, honor, duty, weakness, and sociopathy behind the archetype.
It doesn't FEEL like a perfect film, but even its seeming missteps are subsumed into its poetry.
