Review of Sonatine (1993) by T K — 08 Jul 2006
Two rival Yakuza clans are at war in Takeshi Kitano's third feature film as director which, again, revolves around the Yakuza (Japanese gangsters) - a constant source of inspiration and setting for Kitano's characters and narratives.
As an attempt to stop the bloodshed, Kitano and his own loyal clan are sent out to act as mediators between the rival clans and stop the ensuing violence. Kitano's handling of crime fiction is always thoroughly engaging, and this is no exception.
The trademark Kitano wit and slapstick antics of the mid-section are as hilarious and unique as in any of his previous or subsequent features. The contrasting violence and tension of the final act, compliments the earlier innocence, cementing the unforgiving reality and ethics of Yakuza life and warfare.
