Review of Son of Rambow (2007) by Ned P — 18 Jan 2009
I expected bundles of cheek and energy from Son of Rambow, so it came as something of a disappointment that it had only a moderate amount. A love letter to boyish endeavour and the joy of film-making, the main plot is agreeable but not thrilling, and the two main sub-plots are no more than an afterthought.
Developing Will and Lee's back stories would have made them more likeable, meaning some of their bad behaviour would come across as scampish rather just than plain mean. More funny moments would have been welcome as well, as natural charm only takes the film so far.
Entertaining and fairly lively, but not worth watching more than once.
