Review of Son in Law (1993) by Tom R — 21 Nov 2012
(1 Star) Son in Law (which is technically a Thanksgiving movie) is either a subtle attempt to show colleges are indoctrinating teenagers into becoming complete morons or an awful Pauly Shore comedy... I pick the latter. It's an extremely predictable comedy that confuses "cool" with "loaded-gun-in-your-mouth irritating." The thing about Crawl (Pauly Shore, and yes, that's his character's name) is that he is not misunderstood and hip... he's an awful human being and we're supposed to buy the fact that a good girl (Carla Gugino) actually falls for him... and changes her entire way of thinking. Just imagine every annoying thing you hate about Pauly Shore and that's Crawl.
The plot is so idiotic. Rebecca goes to college, somehow feels sorry for her clearly retarded R.A., then invites him back for Thanksgiving dinner. Her family is shocked by how much she has changed and blames Crawl and his stupid name for changing their daughter into a blockhead (and I'M WITH THEM!!). But because this doesn't exist in the real world, the come around to Crawl and his dingbat ways.
The ending just f**king sucks. The family drinks the Kool-Aid and thinks the Pauly Shore character is a righteous dude, apparently forgetting the thousands of dollars in damage he causes and the fact they changed their daughter into a loon. Son in Law is a crummy comedy that makes me sick. I know every decade is different in its perceptions, but I nominate the 1990's as having one of the worst ideas of "cool.".
