Review of Somewhere in Time (1980) by Marc H — 08 Mar 2008
I have a soft spot for this...for a start it was one of the first films I saw of the 'time travelling' genre and that has always been of great interest to me.
I first saw it as a teenager and it had an incredible effect on me - I grew to love Rachmaninoff for one thing - and I just saw it tonight for probably only the 2nd time with my own teenage son and his girlfriend. A bit soppier than I recalled and maybe a bit hammier too, but Jane Seymour was just as beautiful as I remembered...and it still made me cry, even though I remembered the ending.
By the way, (and talking about the ending) with what I know now I can see why it met with little critical acclaim or box-office success at the time. Americans hate sad endings as much now as they did then...nothing changes (ask anyone involved in 'A Perfect Storm'). Ho hum.
