Review of Somewhere (2010) by Justin V — 26 May 2011
A listless film that redeems itself by its honest depiction of a late-blooming relationship between a man & his daughter. Although director Sophia Coppola wrote the main role of Hollywood star Johnny Marco for Stephen Dorff, he seems incapable of playing an actor or a star. The revelation is Elle Fanning, who continues to impress, much like her sister, Dakota, did at the same age.
With very little dialogue, Coppola dares the viewer to read the characters' minds and understand their feelings through subtlety, body language and facial expressions. It's very tough to pay attention, or even care, for the entire 97 minutes. But there is a charm to Somewhere that I just can't place.
