Review of Somewhere (2010) by Emil G — 08 Sep 2011
A quiescent movie with a vacant protagonist which does have a bit of a hypnotic quality to it (the camera stays put or zooms in or out on a static scene just a bit longer than expected). I don't think, however, that Sofia Coppola has really measured up to the similarly themed movies by Antonioni (as some critics are saying) -- he did come to mind, but his great achievement was to play with viewers' expectations (often structurally) not just to photograph the idle rich.
OK enough but no great shakes.
