Review of Somewhere (2010) by Sudha T — 23 Apr 2011
Sofia Coppola is a certain type of director, as was her father. She makes certain type of movies and I understand that, however when does one make time to step outside their boundries? Somewhere falls into similar territory with much of her other work, thats not a bad thing.
..it just is... The melancholy tone and infinite sadness that this film brings make it extremely meaningfull yet in some way it is just fluff, it is a movie without a plot, which I love with most films but this one just doesnt have enough substance to make it enjoyable.
That being said the acting was superb from every aspect and the cinimetography was literally some of the best I have ever seen in a film, EVER. That is what impress' me most about this film. The direction and cinimetography of this film are examples of direct beauty and if only the film had more substance to it I believe it had a chance of being her best film, next to Lost in Translation of course which was amazing, but Somewhere doesnt fail as a film, it just doesnt succeed as it should have.
