Review of Somewhere (2010) by Darren P — 02 Jul 2011
3: I definitely understand why so many everyday viewers seem to have hated it, while a select group of critics seem to have loved it: it's a bit of a slow-moving art-house picture where not much happens through long sections.
It is a subtle, nuanced, and delicate picture that simple follows this small handful of characters around, while focusing its view on a mega-movie star, his relatively sad life, and his new relationship with his daughter.
I'm curious to see if Coppola will make more conventional Hollywood pictures in the future, especially after this rather harsh comment on Hollywood and its effect on those it sucks into its web. She seems to have shifted towards a very European aesthetic, and more specifically an Italian one.
One could easily compare this to many of the great Italian directors of the 60's and 70's, specifically Antonioni and Bertolucci, although it lacks the beauty and mesmerizing tone of those directors.
I hope it will grow on me in the future though. This time around it was merely understated, quiet, and excellent.
