Review of Somewhere (2010) by J.b. R — 23 Aug 2011
Somewhere opens and closes with heavy-handed metaphors and not a whole lot happens in between. A famous actor leads an empty and boring life, a common motif we've seen plenty before and one not supremely different or insightful here.
Sofia Coppola is talented enough so that the film is watchable, although it's much too artsy at times, but it seems she is trying to duplicate Lost In Translation's impact with far lesser characters.
The performances are pretty good but again there's not a ton of depth to work with, especially when that usually translates to Stephen Dorff aimlessly staring off camera. Somewhere plays like the last season plus of Entourage but without the entourage, not exactly a lasting accomplishment.
