Review of Somewhere (2010) by Tosh B — 11 Feb 2012
A brave film in many ways. Not too many directors would take the time to dwell slowly and longingly on many scenes, often filming situations of next to nothingness. But Coppola is that director and this is that sort of film.
It concerns itself with vacant ennui of Johnny Marco, a film star who spends his time living decadently at the Chateau Marmont. When his 11yo daughter shows up, he has to evaluate his very existence. But this is done with subtlety and nuanced acting.
This hypnotic film draws you into its world and eventually takes a grip on him. However its strength is probably its weakness. Its lack of drama means that sometimes you feel yourself floating between scenes.
Ultimately though it is a fascinating and thoughtful film with fine performances from Dorff and Fanning.
