I wouldn't write off the film as bad. After all, Sofia is too self-conscious a director to make anything as generic as, say, Ang Lee's. If that is the case then, my complaint is that the characters are very uninteresting and the situation is not well-developed here.
Whereas a sense of oppression and danger hangs thick in The Virgin Suicides, here, everything feels light-hearted and unintriguing.
