Review of Something's Gotta Give (2003) by John S — 03 Apr 2010

If someone is looking for a good movie for their wife, sister, girlfriend or just a woman on the street, you can safely bet on that Something's Gotta Give is going to do the job for you. But it's not that hard to believe because Nancy Meyers (What Women Wants and more) is a pro in making good films for women enjoyment.

We are obviously talking about a formula film, maybe to much of a formula film but what romantic comedy isn't? This movie is ass deep in cliches and if that's not enough, I felt sometimes she even "stole"? from other movies. Meyers was probably just done watching You've Got Mail when she decided to right a script and Annie Hall, When Harry Met Sally and As Good As It Gets also perhaps. The part that I think saves the film and makes it just watchable for men are the performances by these wonderful actors. Jack Nicholson is fantastic in his part like always and pokes a little fun at him self by playing this characters who dates younger women but he is or rather was known for dating women much younger then him. The always wonderful Diane Keaton brings a solid performance, maybe even one of her best. Amanda Peet is also great but this was probably the first movie where I thought she was finally doing the right movies. Keanu Reeves is well Keanu Reeves and does actually nothing that even shakes is acting abilities.

The movie is also quite entertain and funny at times but it surprised me she didn't fall into the pit that most romantic comedies fall into, loosing them self's in the drama but thankfully they were able to avoid that. I have to say that I thought the movie went on for far too long but I think they could have easily cut it down 10-15 minutes. To sum up Something's Gotta Give is a solid entertainment with actors that stand strong but she is mostly going to impress with women.
