Review of Something Wild (1986) by Pavan R — 14 Sep 2010
I've always loved this movie. It's a great 1980s hipster update of the classic screwball comedy. The big twist here is that it's not just a straight screwball comedy. Imagine "Bringing Up Baby" or "The Lady Eve" being interrupted halfway through by Max Cady from "Cape Fear" showing up as Katherine Hepburn or Barbara Stanwick's psychotic ex-boyfried.
This is probably Melanie Griffith's best performance (yes, even better than "Working Girl"). Ray Liotta dominates every scene he appears in. But for me, this is Jeff Daniel's movie. He's so perfectly cast, is extremely likable, and makes what could have been a thankless straight-man role into a full three dimensional character.
There's a terrific soundtrack, that includes Oingo Boingo, Sister Carol, David Bryne, and John Cale. There's also more cameo appearances than you can shake a stick at, from Charles Napier to John Water to Tracey Walter to John Sayles to David Bryne's mom.
A great movie all around!
