Review of Something Wild (1986) by Leighton T — 03 Sep 2011
A strange, odd comedic tragedy that seems very much in the vein of screwball romantic comedies that made up the 30's and 40's. Its absurd touches and wonderfully straight-line performances make the film into something quite special, surreal, and different from almost any genre you try to put it in.
The way the story takes shape, from a sort of kidnapping, into something more, about truth and lies and the way our lives take shape, makes for an incredibly intriguing story in terms of small themes mixed with what our characters do next as they react to each escalating situation.
I found it to be almost perfect until the ending which felt slightly overdramatic (maybe that's the point) and sort of flattened out what had been so intriguing as the movie moved along. Still, the way the story goes from being one thing to another to another is fantastic and keeps the viewer guess, intrigued and even caring for the characters in almost baffling ways.
