Review of Something Wild (1986) by Eric R — 14 Feb 2011
A New York businessman who likes to play everything safe meets a free-spirited young woman named Audrey who essentially kidnaps him from his job for a wild weekend. The two are bitter opposites but they are attracted to each other, and everything is going great until her ex-boyfriend shows up.
Something Wild is a well written, fun, and creative romantic comedy/drama which really excels in its very own from of Americana cinema. Melanie Griffith and Jeff Daniels are both fantastic at their respective roles, and they are really fun to watch play off each other.
About halfway through the film there is a massive tonal shift, where the films gets pretty dark, almost playing more like a thriller; mostly because of the arrival of the ex-boyfriend, played perfectly by Ray Liotta.
The production design is great, particularly everything that Audrey owns just saturates the frame with crazy and wild color schemes. The music is also perfect adding another layer of Americana to the film; particularly "Wild Thing" which occurs throughout the film, most of the time being song or played by someone actually in the film.
Something Wild is playful, funny, dramatic, and every scary at times.. its pretty rad.
