Review of Something Wild (1986) by Sam B — 21 Sep 2011
Jeff Daniels and Melanie Griffith race down the east coast as basically the yuppie versions of Bonnie and Clyde. Their crimes may not be as great as the other cinematic duo, but the film itself has just as much energy as the 1967 one.
Both of the leads are better in this than anything I've ever seen them in. Besides for Daniels, Griffith and an incredibly electric Ray Liotta pretty much every role in the movie is stunt cast. We get John Sayles, John Waters, Steven Scales (from the Talking Heads) and many more in small but quirky roles.
The soundtrack is by John Cale and Laurie Anderson with an opening song by David Byrne. Some of my favorite 80's song also appear throughout the film, working perfectly with the narrative. At the start of the movie I really like its funky style but I couldn't get into the two main characters, I thought they were too superficial and annoying frankly.
As the movie progressed however they became real characters that I grew to care about.
