Review of Something the Lord Made (2004) by Ted R — 10 Feb 2011
While the title may make this sound like a religious movie in some way, the film really is not a blatant or even an indirectly religious film. The title is essentially just a quote the famous doctor said about his assistant Vivien Thomas. Interesting enough however, the statue of Jesus in the main entrance of Johns Hopkins hospital is in many important scenes and the existence and view of God is touched on in the film, but in a rather agnostic fashion or skeptical fashion.
The is a very good film. One of my favorites and reminds me in many ways of the film "Gifted Hands" which also relates Johns Hopkins Hospital. Mos Def does an excellent job in this role and loses himself in the character. The story about Vivien Thomas is inspiring and heart breaking. I never knew about this story and it is an amazing story in medical history that touches on our history of racism and racism today. It is also good to see that Alan Rickman play an amazing and interesting character as well. Although there is a glimpses of Die Hard in my head, Rickman plays this character so well those dissipate quickly. An all around great movie that more people need to see.
