Review of Something the Lord Made (2004) by Oliver H — 22 Feb 2011
This is a "based on a true story" movie that truly is a must see. Allan Rickman is simply amazing in the part of Tennessee native Dr. Blalock. If you're an Alan Rickman fan Netflix this movie immediately. Rickman's performance is right up there with Hans Gruber, the Sheriff of Nottingham and Col. Brandon. I never would have picked a rapper like Mos Def to play Vivien Thomas but I would have been terribly wrong. Mos Def brings real heart to the movie which is, of course, what the movie is about, the world's first heart operation.
It's a great story of two men who have to overcome great obstacles to fulfill their mission in life. Blalock must overcome the opinion of his peers which is the operation will kill his patient. Thomas must overcome poverty and racism to become the doctor he was meant to be.
What an inspiring story.
Word of warning to parents with small children. Dr. Blalock has a short temper and makes liberal use of four letter words when he looses it.
