Review of Something the Lord Made (2004) by Mark S — 06 Dec 2011
This was a GREAT movie but I think it made Vivien Thomas look very arrogant and naive. He only has a high school education and there is a part of the movie when he goes to a "colored college" to try and go back to school to get a degree and go to med school but he wants credits for courses that HE THINKS he already knows simply because he participated in research with a physician at a hospital.
He actually gets upset when they say they can't do that and he would have to start at the beginning like any other freshman. He then just gets up and walks out very offended. I mean what did he think? How arrogant he looked thinking he just go in and basically ask for a degree just because he has done things on the side.
You still have to earn the college credits just like everyone else. So because of this movie, I don't have much respect Vivien Thomas. I have much more respect for Dr. Blalock who tried to do as much for Vivien as he could, especially considering the times they were in and it still was not enough.
Dr. Blalock was the real hero and deserved all the credit he got. Vivien didn't earn anything, but he did do a lot of hard work.
