Review of Something Like Summer (2017) by Nhia T — 01 Nov 2017
Overall, if you read the books for this film, it would make sense. I enjoyed the film because it was a realization of the characters that I loved and hated. That being said, The film had some good thing going for it such as the acting and music and even the creative way they managed to convey the leaps in years.
However, the pacing of it seemed too quick. You're jumping from one emotion to another basically every 5-10 mins and by the end of it, even though you're invested in the plot and the characters, you're left wondering if that was the whole movie or if there was more to come. I get that they had to cram 10-12 years within 115 min, which caused the hasty ending, but there could be no way to fill everything into the movie, unless this was made into a television series.
Overall, the film was a good and entertaining. it will have you laughing, crying, and feeling annoyed all at the same time. The musical tie-ins to the film is also an enjoyable addition that doesn't always interfere with the rest of the film. Being a fan of the book, I applaud how much information the production crew managed to put into the film.
