Review of Somers Town (2008) by Eric G — 30 Aug 2008
It doesn't bother me whether the film is an ad for Eurostar or not, as long as the story is interesting. There are some interesting ideas here but they are not pushed to their conclusion. That makes the film interesting but not powerful.
The story being so light, it is difficult for the two main characters to carry it until the end. The supporting cast is strong and the film would have benefited if we saw them more.
The choice of black and white doesn't bring much to the film. If it was to show the bleakness of London, it didn't work for me. Mike Leigh does it in colour and it certainly works!
The end is very odd, quite unbelievable and abrupt. I still wonder why the director suddenly chose to shoot the trip in Paris in colours, moreover using 1970s faded colours.
The film doesn't generate strong emotions, except for the fight at the beginning, and although an ok film will be easily forgotten.
