Review of Somers Town (2008) by Kate H — 03 Sep 2008
This is a funny and touching film, but I must confess that I left the cinema disappointed at the rather thin narrative and lack of character development. Then I thought, I'm not sure that's the point.
This film is actually a fantastic cinematic portrait of life for those who are drawn into London, it is a portrait of London as seen through the eyes of the newcomer to the city, and it is a Meadow's own honest portrait of the city.
Obviously, it is a highly selective view, reinforced by the use of black and white stock which somehow gives unity to the whole of the frame, Tommy becomes one with the environment - although I'm sure this was no intended by Meadows.
In short, go and see, and then go and pick up your own camera and go and start creating your own portraits.
