Review of Somers Town (2008) by Dave J — 07 Sep 2008
Shot in black and white, this is a fantastic follow up to Shane Meadows' 2007 hit 'This Is England', starring Thomas Turgoose as a runaway who upon arriving in London befriends a Polish immigrant boy.
The two quickly become fast friends and endeavour to find some hope and happiness in life, mainly by pursuing a French waitress at their local run-down cafe. Very funny and engaging, this is a simple tale of friendship and life choices, which, while not as powerful or on par with 'England' will still resonant with it's audience as the two friends stumble through their adventures together.
With some very naturalistic acting, gritty London settings and a very real sense of hope overcoming the crap in the world, this is a top draw quality film, from one of the UK's more exciting directors!
