Review of Somers Town (2008) by Burcu S — 21 Dec 2008
Coming in at just over an hour, this is a little tale of friendship formed between a runaway and a Polish immigrant. Thomas Turgoose returns to Meadows territory after a somewhat star-making performance in This is England, and puberty hit him like a ton of bricks.
He also has matured greatly as an actor. The two boys bond through similarities in their lives such as one being bullied and the other having trouble at home with his alcoholic father. Their friendship goes further when they both fall for the same girl, and when she leaves unexpectly for Paris, they vow to save up enough money and visit her someday.
Filmed in black-and-white with desolate shots of the miserable town, you really hope that they break out of it. The end being filmed in color when the boys reconnect with the love of their lives is the pièce de résistance.
Nowhere near the level of excellence of This is England, though it's a strong and applaudable counterpart.
