Review of Somers Town (2008) by Pip P — 12 Dec 2009
While not as accomplished or visceral as Meadow's This is England, ST is a charming and heartfelt little tale of friendship and otherness that is rarely seen in cinema these days. Turgoose plays his homeless teen with cheeky aplomb and his relationship with the dour but reliable Pole makes for the perfect double act, especially when they bond in rivalry over the affections of a beautiful French waitress.
Perry Benson as the neighbour has some neat comedic scenes and the rest of the supporting cast weave intimately with the two leads. Don't expect grit or shock: Somers Town is as romantic and sweet a movie as you're likely to find these days without taking a sick bag to the flicks.
Lovely stuff.
