I think this is my favorite John Hughes, this or The Breakfast Club. It's the inverse of Pretty in Pink, with the blue collar pretty redhead (Eric Stoltz to PinP's class traitor Molly Ringwald) falling for the best friend instead of the initial infatuation.

I'd like to see the original end to Pretty in Pink - Ducky got the girl in that version. Anyhow, this is one of the best 80's teen romances ever made. I will always associate The Beat's So Lonely - Charlie Sexton, with the scene where Elias Koteas crashes the party and humiliates the rich asshole, Craig Scheffer.
