Review of Some Kind of Wonderful (1987) by Kenneth L — 01 Dec 2008
John Hughes and Howard Deutch's sophomore outing after the smash hit Pretty in Pink is a slightly more mature rendering of teenage love and angst in the 80s. Responsible for the depth is a strong cast including Craig Sheffer (filling in admirably for James Spader in what seems to be a monopoly on smarm), Lea Thompson and a compellingly earnest Eric Stoltz.
Watch out also for a starmaking turn by Elias Koteas as the rebellious detention prone gang leader with a warm fuzzy heart that would have you cheering for him by the end. But this time, it is Mary Stuart Masterson who gives a gritty breakout performance as a grease monkey quietly in love with her best friend, even as she selflessly gives him tips on pursuing the girl from the other side of the tracks.
The film is at turns surprising, heartfelt and honest without ever being patronizing. Classic Hughes.
