Review of Solomon Kane (2009) by Dean M — 27 Dec 2010
Surprisingly good - I had very low expectations of this movie, and was favourably impressed. The masterstroke is that the film focusses on Solomon Kane's character, which is the most interesting thing about Howard's stories - that Kane is an anti-hero, struggling with his own conscience and a god which forces him to commit terrible acts to help the good. Purefoy portrays this very well - I genuinely found myself caring for the character.
The film's main fault lies in its denouement - the whole evil sorcerer battle is quite incongruous and jarring as it takes the film from a psychological focus to a more trad fantasy one. I would have preferred that fight to have had more to do with Kane's inner conflict than just bashing a big evil monster.
A good film though. Will definitely watch it again.
