Review of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) by Alex L — 03 Jun 2018
Solo shows me that Disney and CO fundamentally don't understand Star wars, and what made these movies great. A New Hope is special because it's introduction to the world doesn't follow the cliches of other origin stories.
You are thrusted into a world that is fully realized and you get small glimpses of it, leaving you wanting more. Disney now seems gung ho to go and explain every detail in the Original film, taking away the Franchise's greatest strength: our imagination.
Ramifications to the franchise as a whole on the side, Solo is jammed pack with lazy writing, pandering to fans, and elementary-level writing tropes. Nothing about the film, its characters, or its plot is special.
It's all contrived, monotonous, and trite. While I really enjoyed the visuals, and even the acting, that couldn't save the movie from it's biggest flaw, the lack of urgency. I never felt that these characters where in danger (the biggest hurdle of any prequel), and that any of the events mattered.
Disney needs to take a hard look at their writing team and their overall vision for the franchise. Because they don't get it.
