Review of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) by Rhett W — 23 Nov 2018
Solo... where do I even begin? First of all I would like to thank Kathy Kennedy for officially destroying the "Star Wars Rush" that I always had before the release of a Star Wars movie. I mean, what was she thinking? Even Lucas knew how short of memory humans have. That's why he was able to get away with the prequels. Just make them 3 years apart and eventually we will be itching to see "Star Wars" again. No matter how bad it is.
Now, Kennedy has sold her soul to the dark side and given every fanboy the proverbial middle finger by saucing us with a deluge of bad movies. We now are in fatigue mode right now, because Kennedy has decided to make Star Wars nothing more special than a happy meal at McDonalds. Thanks.
So, I hope the box office was a clear enough signal to Kennedy to STOP THIS INSANITY! NOW!
So where do we sit now? In Star Wars purgatory. There is no delight left. No mystery. No anticipation. The only emotion I am left with is dread for the next Star Wars social justice commentary that is fed to us.
I have to give Kennedy props, though, for delaying Star Wars IX until the end of 2019. If she even cared just one wit about the story and not about the bottom line, then she would make the release date May 2020. That would give the creative team time to do the impossible -- write a script to fix everything that Rian did.
Now, for Solo? The movie was so bad on so many levels. First, Aiden. What the heck? How did this guy ever pass a casting call? Did he even have to read any lines? Look, I'm sorry but this cat can't act. I'm not being mean, I'm just calling it like it is. And the director/writer gaffs are breathtaking. I mean, I almost got up and left the theater during the embarrassing moment when Han speaks "Wookie" to Chewbacka in the dungeon. Yeah, ALL the other films had it right. Wookies can understand ENGLISH. No need to pretend like you are choking on your own spit.
