Review of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) by Darryl H — 15 Jan 2019
Lucasfilm doesn't get it. Fans don't want to be pandered to they just want a good story. I'm not even a Han Solo fan. I mean, I like the guy's character arc in the original trilogy but... he's not my favorite character or anything. But I am almost certain my eyeballs just about got stuck in the back of my head from all the eye rolls of "And this is how Han Solo got this, and that, and that!" Great. Fan service for the sake of fan service, wish there was an enticing story behind all of that. It becomes even more unbearable when you know or realize the film was going to be the first of however many... if the film was going to be the first of many films why did they feel the need to jam everything about Han Solo in the first film? They should have played the first film with Han being in the empires military and explored what that was like, what a missed opportunity.
Was the film the worst thing in the world? No, but Han Solo came off as dull and boring as Rey. Both characters seem to be cut from the same piece of cardboard and put into a world that has to adjust itself to them rather than them trying to find their way around the world.
And uh... I thought people said Star Wars was a kids film. So, making a point to make Lando Pansexual isn't a big deal in a kids movie? We should encourage kids to bang robots? The movie is a disaster, they didn't even attempt to hide the messages they were trying to push. Lucasfilm is actively trying to merge a galaxy far away with our own galaxy. I'm not going to pay Disney and Lucasfilm to be preached at for 3 hours.
