Review of Solitary Man (2009) by Gregory R — 18 Jan 2011
Michael Douglas plays Ben Kalmen, a relatively model citizen for most of his life, beloved father and husband, but when his doctor delivers bad news about his health this sends him into a tailspin of self destruction.
The film fast forwards 6 years ahead and we see an aged man who has lost his business, his wife (Susan Sarandon) and his money after he is caught participating in scams. He's on uneasy terms with his daughter (Jenna Fischer) due to his questionable behavior and known womanizing ways and despised by his son-in-law who requests she not see her father nor expose their son to him.
Instead of getting his life back in order, Ben shacks up with his rich girlfriend Jordan (Mary-Louise Parker) but still tries to nail everything in a skirt. He's asked to escort his girlfriend's 18 year-old daughter, Allyson (Imogen Poots) to his alma mater in Massachusetts for a tour and to put in a good word with the dean.
Will Ben change his dirty ways or will he succumb to temptation and risk losing his self respect and alienating himself from almost all of his friends and family??? You'll have to watch to find out.
Also starring, Danny Devito and Jesse Eisenberg from The Social Network and Zombieland.
