Review of Solaris (2002) by Jonathan Y — 25 Nov 2008
Steven Soderbergh and James Cameron team up in this visually interesting sci-fi opus to turn Tarkovsky's chilly 1972 masterpiece into a perplexing bit of popcorn fluff that can't seem to decide if it's a kindred spirit to the original film (which was coldly cerebral and deliberately confusing) or a crowd-pleasing, Clooney-powered treatise on love and family, Hollywood style.
At the end of the day, it's neither... Soderbergh may be a savvy, skilled auteur in his own right, but he seems at a loss for what to do with Tarkovsky's original premise, other than to turn it into something similarly opaque, but much less mysterious.
