Review of Solaris (2002) by Adam B — 26 Nov 2008
Steven Soderbergh does Tarovski with space station epic, but not quite opera. Hollywood version of the classic Russian space opera, only not nearly as cool, dark or brooding. Going for Clooney vehicle more than the nature of loneliness, it falls flat.
Part if the problem is the translation to an American script, where the whole brooding deal doesn't work with Clooney moping about like a sad puppy for his lost love. It's just annoying. Instead of being pulled into the atmosphere of it, there is a constant disconnect that this would never happen.
