Review of Solaris (2002) by Evan K — 11 May 2008
It's like styrafoam. Though nicely painted and carved, it's still styrafoam. Eye see what they wanted to do, and they did it well, real tight, but it is so boring and devoid of color. Why do people make films worse than life? To prove it's possible? Is this a skill??? I just saw the original and this gives me insight into what they were doing, reflecting the dead personalities with a dead cinematic syle.
But this film suffers terribly, they totally lost the horror feeling derived from the unknown. The matte shots with the ocean are great and really help bridge that alienating gap found in the original, but this film still lacks the feeling needed to unfold the mysteries of our humanity.
The questions aren't as present and the explosive ending is the wrong tone. Hmm....
