Review of Solaris (2002) by Koen V — 23 Aug 2008
Unjustly overlooked, Steven Soderbergh's telling of Solaris is one of the better films ever made. George Clooney gives this performance everything he's got, and it is definitely my favorite of his films.
I thought of reviewing this film because I just reviewed The Fountain. A lot of the same topics are handled in both films, and both produce spectacular results. Solaris is a moving, mature, and beautiful piece of science fiction filmmaking.
I am reminded of 2001: A Space Oddysey... both that and Solaris move at a slow pace (which I found totally engrossing, but others will feel drags). This pacing in Solaris' case allows for richer character development and a total immersion into the film's universe.
A truly excellent and grossly underrated film.
