Review of Solaris (2002) by Patrick B — 22 Dec 2008
An American(ized) version of the Russian '60's sci-fi I reviewed earlier. This one, predictably, losses philosophical, theological and existential depth by focusing almost exclusively on the romantic aspect - the Russian film had a much broader view of humanity.
Clooney is a perfect choice for the role of the protagonist however, and the film does keep some of he best elements of the original - the seriousness with regard to the human condition, the introspective tone, the antiseptic space sets, etc.
. Soaris also loses a bet by not taking their queue from the brilliant and mysterious ending of the original. The original was an adventure of discovery for the viewer, a mystery we worked to unravel; here we become less involved, are handed the solutions too readily.
