Review of Solaris (2002) by Jim S — 23 Jun 2009
I don't quite like the dislocation between the creepy dreamy spiritual aspects of the film and the plot/action bits. It's a while since I saw it, but thinking back, there was enough about this film that was memorable to up it to 4* whereas a sentence ago I was thinking 3.5. The look and feel of it, Clooney's excellent performance, and the central themes of imagination, comfort, and reality - a lotus-eater story - were egrossing.
I tell my kids, it's not THINGS that are boring, it's YOU that finds them boring. This film is a case in point. It most certainly is not plotless or boring, but it is soft and long and slow and that needs to be to your taste to enjoy this.
