Review of Solaris (2002) by Rory P — 08 Sep 2009
Tarkovsky > Soderbergh.
The film seemed cold, distant and dispassionate (not like 2001 which is supposed to be).
Everything looked manufactured. It had a fake beauty to it. The cinematography is bland (it looks like one of those commercials that try to look like a film), the music is straight out of a b video game, the acting sucked and everything was spelled out the viewer.
Soderbergh tries to have poetic moments in his film (with montages that juxtapose past and present with reality) but they come off as obvious and cliche. In fact the movie wants to be something that is new and fresh, but is ultimately nothing more than convention.
On the plus, Natascha McElhone is hot. But, Natalya Bondarchuk (from Tarkovsky's film) is hotter.
