Review of Solaris (2002) by Thomas M — 04 Jul 2010
When a film has such a small cast you really need to have a strong leading man to keep the audience involved throughout the film and fortunatly we are plesed to se George Clooney is the lead. He brings realism and a naturalistic quality to the role which not many "unexperienced" actors would have been able to bring.
Also the leading man behind the camera does a great job in both the script and the directing. The slow takes and slow pacing of the movie helps build tension and drag out each scene so you are not allowed to leave your seat as there is no action codes which tell you when something big is going to happen.
Soderbough also makes the film look beautiful with a blend of dark and technoligical cinematography which beautifully contrasts the bright natural feel you get from Solaris which is just outside their windows.
The way "Solaris" is shot as well is interesting in itself as the angles which Soderbough uses are original and sometimes make you believe you are seeing something you arn't which is a representation of one of the main themes of "seeing is not believing".
