Review of Solaris (2002) by Andrew B — 13 Sep 2010
In my humble opinion, this film has been very wrongfully underrated. It's one of Soderbergh's bravest and boldest exploration of cinema. Taking off where 2001: Space Odyssey ends, it deals with death and how it defines us as humans.
The musical litany perfectly accompany the enigma which lies at the heart of our existence: what if we wouldn't have to die? This film is the quintessential science-fiction film, making us look at our very existence and our place in reality with different eyes.
The obsessing recitation of the words of Dylan Thomas' poem "Death Shall Have No Dominion" is one of the most beautiful use of poetry I've heard used on one of the most poignant scene I've seen.
