Review of S.O.B. (1981) by Stephen C — 13 Aug 2012
Finally given a US DVD release by the excellent Warner Archive label ,Blake Edwards launches a blistering comic attck on the system which destroyed some his movies most notably Darling Lilli.
Felix Farmer is a manic movie producer who's latest film starring his wife is a 30 million dollar bomb.
At first he is suicidal and this being Blake Edwards there are several laughs to be had as Farmer tries to kill himself.
The he is struck by the crazy idea of having the movie go Porno and his wife bear her breasts on screen.
Edwards decided once and for all to change the goody two shoes image of his wife Julie Andrews by having her play the female lead, which means yes we get to see Mary Poppins with her top off!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for the the film well its packed with great performances from an over the top Richard Mulligan as the crazed Felix Farmer ,to a sublime Robert Preston as his drunk pill dispensing doctor and William Holden and Robert Webber as his close friends.
The film has lots of belly laughs and acid thrown into its heady brew leading up to a very funny sequence involving the stealing of a corpse from a funeral parlour.
Edwards always had the knack to pulling of great comedy and nothing is left to chance as he sends up the Hollywood system something rotten .
