Review of So Close (2009) by Jennifer O — 13 Apr 2004
So Close--6/10. I think I'm being generous with this rating. This movie almost overdoses on slow motion scenes. The girls are very attractive, some of the action is cool, but the one on one fights between the women are too staged, too phoney, too rehearsed. There's nothing there. You can almost hear them counting off blows and kicks. And how many slow motion images of broken glass do they have to film? Jeez.... And the story? Yeah, I'd like to know where that was, too.
Sex and Lucia--8/10 Very sexy Spanish film about a young woman and her writer boyfriend. Their relationship is shown in a series of flashbacks which almost consume Lucia as she seeks refuge on a Mediterranean island. Very good performances by all of the leads, but not for the prudish...
Big Trouble in Little China--7/10 Silly fun. My mother and niece LOVED it to death, but I couldn't get into it as much as they did. MASS, ORCA, and GHOST will have my hide for sure. :D.
MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOSTS--5/10 :rotten: Cannot recommend this. I don't know why it's described as a horror film, because it's anything but.
May's husband dies shortly after their wedding. 3 years later, while drinking and driving, May has an accident and she wakes up to find that she can see ghosts through her left eye. She interacts with "KEN" the ghost of a childhood friend, who helps her cope with the death of her husband. It's absurd because throughout most of the film she displays no affection or sadness for her late husband. Damn, this movie was boring. Even the funny parts were lame. Just dreadful.
HAPPINESS--9/10:fresh: Seriously disturbing movie. Hilarious and horrible at the same time. I HAVE to see it again, and I will be buying this for myself soon. Philip Seymour Hoffman, excellent as always.
