Review of Snowpiercer (2013) by Thaddaeus D — 28 Feb 2016
An extremely thought-provoking and highly original sci-fi, that slipped under the radar.
In an attempt to reverse global-warming, mankind makes a fatal mistake that freezes the planet. The few remaining human survivors live on a train that circles the earth, never stopping. The train is the passengers world, and it is divided up by class. The poor live at the tail of the train, living in squalor, with the wealthy at the front living in opulence and luxury. But it isn't a happy society...
The film is well-paced, beautifully shot, and the cast and their performances are superb. For me, Tilda Swinton steals the show.
The movie has many themes running, and is making comments all over the place, on many levels. Social structuring, the distribution of wealth, the decay of humanity, consumerism, all of these are looked at, and many more besides.
Ultimately, it's a gripping piece of film, so it's doing something important right, it's highly original and very brutal at times. I must say that I still find the ending a bit baffling, and that took the edge off it for me, but that's just my opinion.
It's not going to be enjoyed by everyone, I know that, but if you fancy something to get the old grey matter fired up a bit, give this a try.
