Review of Snowden (2016) by Greg B — 21 Sep 2016
"Snowden" portrays the true story of Edward Snowden, an NSA operative who leaked hundreds of classified government files to the general public. Joseph Gordon-Levitt portrays the titular character in this character study.
While the film does present some interesting questions on the balance between privacy and transparency, it also suffers from being uneven and unbalanced. We really don't get to see Snowden's motivations until the third act and the rest of the film plays it alarmingly safe.
At times it seems to be more of a schmaltzy romance than actually focusing on his story and I wish the narrative took a chance ---------------------------------------------------- C+.
