Review of Snowden (2016) by Kurt B — 27 Sep 2016
There was a lot of prestige behind and in front of the camera. Unfortunately, they all came together and delivered a less than stellar film. Snowden recounts the rise and fall of Edward Snowden's trust in the United States.
The acting isn't terrible, but no one is given anything more than one note characters who are designed to push Snowden. I understand that Snowden has to become weary of everyone and everything, but that doesn't mean his foes and loved ones can't be a little more dimensional.
In terms of pacing, this film drags it's feet for two hour runtime, and every second of that is felt. A long runtime wouldn't be a problem if the film had something to say, but Oliver Stone spends that time idolizing Snowden as much as he can, brushing over the real world consequences of his actions with nothing more than a shrug.
And when the film finally ends on a terribly corny note, the viewer is left with nothing more than a propaganda-lite film.
