Review of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1938) by Morgan W — 17 Oct 2011
Impressive as Disney's first full-length animated feature, Snow White inspired the new generation of animation in both Disney movies as well as all animated movies known today. However, this great feat aside, there is not much that I truly enjoyed about the movie. Snow White sparked the Disney Renaissance, where princesses were the heroines and were always damsels, rescued by their Prince Charming. While this might not seem such a bad thing, it brought with it 1) disorderly family, (i.e. evil stepmothers, dead parent(s) ) and 2) the mantra "Only royalty has happy endings". This is a fact most young children absorb from Disney movies, as they mainly watch the ones with the royalty, and it all starts with Snow White.
On a whole, though, the movie was good, but not great. The voices of most every character but the dwarves hurt my head, from high, squeaky Snow's to the much-older-than-he-should-be Prince's. The plot would not be considered truly unique nowadays nor quite realistic, however, this movie was released in the Depression Era, so people needed happy endings and a story about a princess.
