Review of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (2011) by Katrina C — 15 Jul 2011
This is a beautiful film. I've never read the book, but the themes of sisterhood, friendship, joy, pain, love, and loyalty resonate throughout. I felt like I was watching an old-fashioned Chinese drama and a contemporary movie at the same time - the juxtaposed storylines are masterfully crafted by Wayne Wang ("The Joy Luck Club"). This one's definitely a tearjerker - and not because of the anguish you feel for the characters on-screen - because you are clutching your best friend in the seat next to you and hoping that your friendship, too, last ten thousand years.
A grateful nod to (Chinese-born) producers Wendi Murdoch and Florence Sloan for honoring Chinese traditions, languages, and customs which are so authentically and vibrantly portrayed in SFATSF.
